Graphic Design

Marvin H.

The details are the design.

Marvin H. is a graphic designer across editorial, print, and packaging. Thirty years of grids, paper stocks and press checks, and still convinced that the details are the design.

Marvin began in book publishing, setting type that nobody was supposed to notice, and has been suspicious of design that draws attention to itself ever since. Still goes to every press check in person.

Selected Work
Ashlar — a client proposal carrying the wordmark, laid over a drawing set with limestone and oak samples

Ashlar — Identity Design, 2025

Drawn Like a Drawing

Identity for an architecture studio: a serif wordmark and a single thin line, set with the discipline of the technical drawings on the studio's own boards, and carried onto proposals and drawing sets.

Halcyon — a woven label stitched inside the collar of a linen garment

Halcyon — Graphic Design, 2025

Somewhere for the Pictures to Live

A widely spaced serif wordmark for a slow-fashion label, then everything it had to sit on: a lookbook for stockists, street posters, and woven labels stitched in by hand.

Volta Coffee — press check: bag proofs with Slow Burn printed at headline size

Volta Coffee — Packaging Design, 2023

Type and Nothing Else

Packaging for a coffee roaster made out of type alone: the roast name at the size of a headline, one green, one cream, no illustration and no photograph of a bean.

Field, Redesigned — two copies of Field magazine on a pale oak table, the top cover a single pomegranate on deep green under the masthead FIELD in white capitals

Independent Work — Magazine Redesign, 2024

Field, Redesigned

Redesign of a quarterly food and farming magazine: a new masthead, a twelve-column grid, and covers that run one photograph and one word. Newsstand sales rose by a fifth in the first year.

Within the Collective

Marvin typically leads anything that gets printed — editorial, packaging, identity applications — and the typographic side of identities led by others. Marvin works with V. on how a thing should feel in the hand, and with the collective's writers, because on a page made of type the copy and the layout are the same job.

All project enquiries are handled by Creative Director V. through Influence Design Studio.
